Sometimes when I'm not sure about a recipe but want to try it anyway, I scale down the recipe to 50% of the original. In those circumstances, I found it very difficult to calculate 50% of ¾ cup, or to measure 50% of 1.5 tablespoon, etc. Then I found this handy table in my "Baking for Dummies" book. For instance ¾th of a cup is equal to 12 tablespoons, so half of it would be 6 tablespoons.

1 and 1/4 cups heavy cream and 1/2 cup cake flour is my guess from the charts available in the page.
Madhuram says
I'm guessing 1/2 cup

Glad you find it useful, Shola.
Elizabeth Rodriguez says
80 grams of ginger is how much in oz? or tablespoon? or cup? thanks a lot!
Madhuram says
Hi Elizabeth, are you looking for ground ginger or grated fresh ginger? You can try this website for the conversion: https://www.traditionaloven.com/foods/multi-units-converter/ginger-root-raw.html
Cece says
I don’t know how to measure ingredients. I understand what 80g flour (3/5 cup) is? Please help? Thank you
Madhuram says
In the chart, I see that 75gms is 2/3rd of a cup and 85 gms is 3/4th of a cup. Depending on what you are baking, I would suggest you either use 2/3rd or 3/4th of a cup. I'm sure you can get away with not being very precise.
James says
Hi there, this recipe is asking for 80 grams of cake flour, milk and sugar... as well as 50 grams of canola oil.. I’m not sure what measurements to use. I only use cups not grams
Madhuram says
Those are some specific and tricky measurements and conversions, James. I tried using the chart and it won't be accurate if I just give my estimate. Try some online conversion tables for exact measurements.
kai says
hey so my recipe is asking for 1.5 tsp and i’m having trouble just trying to figure out the whole 1.5 thing. is that like 1/2 tsp or what. i’m kinda struggling here.
Madhuram says
Yes, Kai. It's 1 and a half teaspoon.
Elizabeth Isong says
Thanks for this info, very useful.. please what is cup measurement for 80g of butter?
JJ says
1/3 of a cup
Ryl says
Thanks so much for including this conversion page. Being in Australia, I often give up on US recipes simply because I'm not sure how to convert them to my equipment. And often I'm not even sure whether an ingredient was measured by volume or by weight, so again, this conversion page helps.
Madhuram says
You're welcome, Ryl.
Benjamin Morris says

Diane Humes says
Question: I have noticed that UK/European measurements are quite different from American. They have either a little more or a little less, such as Bread Flour, in grams to cups. That's why my Bread Flour conversion was WAY too much, as Bread Flour is more dense.
Like 500 grams of Bread Flour is 4 cups in our conversion, but in their actual recipe, it woukd be more like 3-3.5 cups.
Help clarify, please.
Madhuram says
Hi, Diane, I think the best bet is to invest in a small kitchen scale that has US cups, gms, ml, ounces, and all sorts of conversion. As I follow the US cup measurement and don't have experience measuring by weight for baking I too have to look at the charts and give a rough estimate which I'm not sure how helpful it will be.
Pranjal says
Please tell the measurements in cup of the following (the quantity of my cup is of 300ml):
33g aquafaba
38g oat flour
50g powdered sugar
38g castor sugar
Madhuram says
It's challenging to convert using the chart, Pranjal. I would suggest investing in a small digital kitchen scale which will have all sorts of conversions.
Janice Morseman says
Sweetened condensed milk 200 mg is how much in cups
Madhuram says
I'm guessing it's close to 3/4th of a cup.
Gail Hansen says
can u please tell me what is 1125grams is in cups for mixed fruit for a cake .
250 grams of butter to cups
395 grams of condensed milk into cups please .
Madhuram says
My rough estimate would be 3.5-4 cups of mixed fruit (candied peel/tutti fruiti), 1.25 cups butter and 1.5 cups condensed milk. I might be wrong. Please invest in a small digital kitchen scale which will be very helpful for such conversions.
Kim says
Hi Madhu ,

Connie Ybarra says

You're very welcome, Connie.
Moana says
I just want to know how many bay leaves is 30 grams
Mona says
It's a little confusing need to know how many bay leaves is it 3/8 or is it 1/4 cups or is it a different measurements bay leaves cuz they did not specify crushed or whole
Madhuram says
Bay leaves are usually used as a whole leaf. It's just for flavoring and aroma. You have to remove the leaf after the cooking is done anyway so crushing it would make it difficult. Just one to two leaves should be fine depending upon the quantity you are cooking.
Nancy says
Hi, I need one help in understanding, if my measuring cups have different measurement for cup, how the above calculation will differ or the above measurements stands the same if I use them?
My measuring cups show below metrics for each:
1cup = 240ml
2/3 cup = 120 ml
1/2cup = 60ml
1/4cup = 30ml
Madhuram says
Sorry, Nancy, I'm unable to understand the question correctly. Can you please be more specific?
Dina says
So math illiterate, Please explain a 20% of six cups of flour in a conversion written out!
Thank you!
DIna
Madhuram says
Hi Dina, 1 cup of all-purpose flour is 110 gms. So 6 cups is 6x110=660 gms. 20% of that is 132gms. Hope this helps.
